Tonio de Roover (1973, Bergen op Zoom) uses for
his objects and installations ordinary things we’re familiar with
in daily life: luxaflex, racks from a refrigerator, a diversity of plastics
and union bags. All these things show traces that indicate their original
purpose, that they have a history behind them. The natural habitat in
which these materials have functioned, is diverse: domestically, in an
office, a factory hall or in public space.
The
objects of De Roover are showing a contradiction between open and functional
versus closed and autonomous. The presence of (artificial) light in it
increases the feeling that the object has interfered in the surrounding
space. They are trying to start an unconventional dialogue, internal as
well as with the viewer. White plastic garden chairs, placed near the
objects are suggesting a gathering that just has ended, like an echo of
human presence.
The work of
Tonio de Roover could be classified as ‘recycle modernism’
(I would like to mark here that he doesn’t want to make an ecological
statement with his re-use of matter). By taking incongruous material out
of it’s original context, to pair it with other material, he creates
objects that are intriguing thanks to their ability to let you look in
a different way at the elements they are made of.
